Mr J.R. Hernandez, MA

Psychological Counselor

I’m J.R. Hernandez (“Your EQ Trainer”). I built this practice for people who value clarity and real follow-through. My work isn’t based on generic scripts; it’s process-based and consultation-led. We define the problem precisely, reduce noise, and focus on what is most likely to change the outcome. You’ll always know what we’re focusing on, what the next step is, and what progress should look like in your day-to-day life. Confidentiality and professional boundaries are central, and I’m explicit about what this work can and cannot do—so you can make informed decisions with confidence.

About Me

Your EQ Trainer didn’t begin as a brand. It began as a response. In the second half of 2019, in New York, the work started as a private practice built around a simple promise: bring clinical-quality support to people who couldn’t easily access it in person. Then the world shifted. The pandemic didn’t just disrupt routines—it shook bodies, minds, relationships, and basic assumptions about safety. People were stuck at home with fear, uncertainty, grief, burnout, and sleepless nights, and many had no practical support that felt both human and competent through a screen. That moment shaped the model: online, but not distant. Structured, but not scripted. Sessions were designed to meet people in their homes with the same closeness and seriousness as in-person work—especially couples, who were suddenly living inside each other’s stress with no escape. Over time, the practice formalized into Your EQ Trainer and expanded naturally into workshops and corporate training, because organizations were facing the same reality: mental health and emotional regulation were no longer “personal issues,” they were performance and safety issues. Today, Your EQ Trainer remains intentionally hybrid in its mission: supporting companies without abandoning individuals and couples. The vision is simple and stubborn: people should be able to work on themselves from their zone of comfort without settling for generic scripts. The goal is personalized, clinically grounded clarity first, then progress that holds up in real life.

Approach

WHAT WE MAP We build a working map so we’re not treating symptoms in isolation. That includes your triggers and symptoms, plus the systems underneath them: sleep and recovery, stress load, attention and energy patterns, mood reactivity, avoidance/overcontrol habits, relationship context, and relevant medical history. CLINICAL CLARITY When appropriate, we screen for red flags and clarify whether what you’re experiencing looks more like an anxiety/mood loop, a stress-physiology overload, an adjustment process, a trauma pattern, or a combination. You get a clear formulation: what drives the problem, what maintains it, and what’s most likely to shift it. WHEN MEDICAL COORDINATION MATTERS If medical follow-up, labs, or medication coordination is relevant, we discuss it directly and responsibly. Good assessment includes knowing what needs a clinical rule-out — not guesswork. WHAT YOU LEAVE WITH A clear working picture of what’s happening and why it keeps happening — plus a practical starting plan that matches your case.

Services

Anxiety, stress and burnout: reduce chronic activation, restore recovery capacity, and break the avoidance/over-control loop that keeps the system “on.” Sleep and recovery: We target downshifting and consolidation so sleep becomes restorative again — not just “more hours in bed.” Low mood and depression: We identify the driver(s), then rebuild reward and function in a way that doesn’t rely on willpower alone. Emotional regulation: Not perfect calm — better recovery speed and more control when it matters. Relationships patterns: We target the loop, not the blame — so repair becomes possible under stress. Life transition and identity: We stabilize the system first, then rebuild direction and meaning with a plan that holds.
